Some days it’s just difficult to find a reason to smile. Today was one of those days for me. It seemed like people were especially rude today… even those who you never would have expected rudeness from. The demands of the day were overwhelming and the commute home lasted longer than usual and I nearly got in a wreck when a car turned in front of me. Have you ever had a day like that? The fact is, we all experience days like this. So, did I smile the whole day? I wish I could say yes but the truth is that I frowned, grumbled, complained, and sighed. However, I was finally able to take a mental step from the frustration and chaos to clear my mind. That allowed me to change perspective. Then, I was able to smile and focus on some of the many things for which I am thankful. Did people suddenly stop being rude? Did their driving improve? Did the demands decrease? Nope, not even a little.
But something significant did change… the way I responded to the situation. Sometimes, the only thing we can change is how we respond. But, when we choose to respond positively, there is great power and freedom in that choice.
